So I was reading over the W3C Working Draft for XHTML 2.0. I must say, I’m looking forward to it so far (that is, when it’ll be most-used standard). The W3C has already stated that it will not be 100% backwards compatible with previous standards (XHTML 1.0 and HTML 4.0) however any current author should understand it with no problem. Everything I’ve seen so far that is new is very self explanatory and takes care of some current issues in web development.

One thing is the W3C has been urging people to use the heading tags to section off web pages (with the heading tags showing levels of importance/precedence). However they’ve not seen it happening as often as they’d like (I know I personally don’t bother with heading tags too often). So they’re introducing the section element. The purpose being to install somewhat of a hierarchy within your web page to denote what is most important and what’s least important.

A big one is the shift from using the br element to the new l element. The new l element will explicitly define new lines instead of having to force break them with the often-times-flawed br.

Another improvement is they’re expanding the purpose of the p element. In current XHTML 1.0 you cannot lists and tables within the paragraph. Personally that has been a huge hindrance to me. In XHTML 2.0 that will no longer be a problem; the likes of lists and tables will be allowed within paragraphs.

The anchor element (a) will be unnecessary as the href attribute can be applied to any element. Thus an entire list entry could be a link doing this:

<li href=”http://google.com”>Google</li>

The last update I’ll mention is the new XFORMS technology that is replacing the current fashion of handling forms in a document. W3C refers to XFORMS as an overhaul… I’d go as far as to say it’s more than that. I’ll be making another post soon to explain more about XFORMS, as the potential behind it is amazing.

So I’ll end this entry with a simple question: If you’ve been keeping up with XHTML 2.0 what are your personal thoughts? And if you haven’t been keeping up with it, but read this entry: How do you feel about these, in some cases drastic, changes?

Come on now, for a woman who’s the running mate to a presidential candidate she is h-a-w-t. Best part of it is- the entire time McCain was introducing her as his running mate it was quite obvious he was looking one place: her chest. So if McCain does become our next president at least we’ll have some eye candy to look at once in a while. Here’s to hoping she’ll be public more so than most Vice Presidents. =P

Anyways, in all seriousness: Anyone else think McCain is merely using Palin as a ploy to win the votes of the woman? Still a smart move in my opinion. Perhaps this is the next step towards America’s first female president.

We’ll see.

One of the issues that article mentioned was the lack of support for 64-bit processors. I’ve dealt with this one myself, for I use a 64-bit processor. And as the author of that article said, it’s not as if Flash was taken by surprise. Excuse the pun, but 64-bit processors weren’t created in a flash. They took years to develop. Yet all that while, Flash couldn’t get ready for it?

Piss poor resource management in my opinion.

If you’re a web developer who believes Perl is a thing of the past: read that essay. If you’re a systems developer who doesn’t use Perl because you think it’s dying or dead: read that essay.

That essay puts into perspective just how thriving Perl still is and explains why people have the notion it’s dead or dying. And it’s all true, very true indeed.

People seem to believe Perl is on its way out the door because it’s losing the solid grip it once had as the leading web development language. One point for those who say it’s not the leading language of choice for web development. It’s not anymore, the alternatives are more plentiful these days; PHP and ColdFusion being the leading contenders (PHP primarily, due to being open source). But negative one point to those that take that fact and believe it means Perl is completely out the door in web development and that it’s going downhill in systems development.

Perl may be losing grip in the web development industry because there are more attractive and dedicated languages to the need. But it’s still as active and thriving as ever in every other aspect.

I’ll quote: “Long live Perl”

Who cares if they break security protocols for their own good or if they break them for the good of everyone else. A “black hat” is just as respectable and admirable as a “white hat”. They merely have different perceptions on what they should use their desire for knowledge on.

But in any case, the article is a good read.

So evidentially Red Hat believes it’s in the midst of creating an OS that will compete with Microsoft and perhaps put a new hand in the OS industry.

Red Hat is already a leading Linux flavor; one of the sole downsides in my opinion is it’s commercial. That’s what makes most Linux user’s who and what they are: their desire and urning for free and open source software.

Will Red Hat make the dent they’re hoping to make? I honestly cannot see any existing Linux users (besides those already using Red Hat) going out and buying it. If a user is willing to do that, then they’re likely willing to buy the current Red Hat distro, seeing how it has been commercial for some time now.

But will Windows or Apple users move over to this new Red Hat OS? Again, I don’t see this happening either. I think the numbers will be too far small and in between.

This will prove mighty interesting in my opinion.
